Arthroplasty for the treatment of Shoulder Osteoarthritis
Ana S. COSTA
This work is a literature review related to the evolution of surgical treatment of shoulder osteoarthritis and objectives are the identification of the various technical options and controversies and also to present new views.
For this, the MEDLINE database was searched using two queries: ("Arthroplasty"[Mesh] AND "Shoulder Joint"[Mesh]) and ((Arthroplasty AND Shoulder) NOT medline[sb]). 937 articles were obtained and 99 selected after reading the abstract or full.
The results suggest that there are several surgical options including hemiarthroplasty, total arthroplasty, reverse arthroplasty and new designs as "resurfacing".
Arthroplasty has been effective for treating omartrose with a remarkable progress in recent decades. Hemiarthroplasty and total arthroplasty have proven their success and survivorship. However, due to concerns about loosening and erosion of the glenoid component, new alternative techniques such as resurfacing are suggested. Currently, reverse total arthroplasty is the most effective in the treatment of rotator cuff arthropathy.
There is no ideal surgical treatment and the choice of one of the techniques depends on multiple individual factors. In the future, treatment will go through innovations in resurfacing and biological restoration of bone surfaces with less invasive methods.
