Orthopedics

Orthopedists at Clínica do Joelho e Ombro are specialized in the treatment of patients with these two areas pathologies, using the most advanced techniques currently available.

Its scope of action extends from degenerative pathology treatment, including all types of arthrosis, through traumatology, namely sports traumatology, with all its specificities.

The most frequent pathologies are: in the shoulder, rotator cuff injuries and instabilities; in the knee, ruptures of the meniscus, ligaments and cartilage injuries.

The evolution has been felt especially in mini-invasive surgery techniques, using high definition arthroscopy, biocompatible implants and adjuvated by factors to improve local biology. Only in this way it is possible to provide less painful postoperative periods, easier rehabilitation, with faster sports recovery.

In osteoarthritis treatment, the use of state-of-the-art implants allows us to expect better functional results and durability to be around 20 years.

The collaboration between all clinicians that integrate this group's allows us to optimize the services we provide to patients who come to us for differentiated treatment.

Physiotherapy

Carried out periodically and, if necessary, associated with anti-inflammatory treatment, physiotherapy is a complex process that seeks to reintegrate patients in their regular daily activities or sports practices, maximizing their capacities.

In specific areas such as the shoulder or the knee, it is essential that physiatrists and physiotherapists master the treatment of the pathologies completely, and are able to correctly assess the extent of the injuries as well as the individual's response to the prescribed therapy.

Our team’s work towards a complete rehabilitation of the patients is based on three fundamental parameters:

Effective communication
— Communication is the basis of a good coordination not only among physicians but also with other professionals involved in the treatment process, and the key to assessing and correcting initially adopted protocols in a timely manner, if needed.

Experience and differentiation
— When treating high-performance athletes, a complete knowledge of the specifics of their pathologies is a necessity. Only with a regular study of each case and contact with the athletes can the professionals collect relevant data.

Available technical resources
— Thermotherapy (heat or cold therapy)
— Electrotherapy (Functional electrical stimulation, galvanic current, ultrasound therapy, shortwave frequency, micro-wave frequency, etc.)
— Laser
— Kinesiotherapy (therapy through movement)
— Mechanotherapy (pulleys, quadriceps rehabilitation chair, cycloergometer, treadmill)
— Joint manipulation
— Hydrocinesitherapy and Hydro Massage
— Our swimming pool is an asset when it comes to treat osteoarticular pathologies, particularly of the knee and shoulder
— Shockwave therapy system - useful when treating calcific tendinitis of the rotator cuff and other enthesopathies.

Pain Consultation

Pain management, whether it is chronic or acute pain, is essential for the patients’ well-being.

Many conditions are difficult to treat with traditional medical practices, e.g. muscle trigger points or algodystrophic syndromes, and require specific therapeutic approaches that only a Pain Management consultation can provide.

In addition, most knee and shoulder surgeries may be performed without general anaesthesia, using locoregional anaesthesia instead, which is safer and provides more postoperative comfort. In order to do that, specific training and knowledge are also needed so that personalised protocols and techniques may be provided in each case.

It is during this stage that we prepare the patient for the postoperative period, implanting the catheters through which pain relief medication will be administered in the days following the procedure. This will reduce the recovery period since it allows the implementation of active mobilisation programs. These treatments are considered essential, not only for elderly patients with degenerative pathologies but also for high-performance athletes with trauma-related injuries.

Intervention Radiology

Interventional radiology integrates a set of procedures performed without the need for hospitalization (ambulatory), only with local anesthesia, and that usually uses ultrasound control (although it can also be performed with the use of an image intensifier or CT scan) to guide a needle to the site of the lesion by aspirating its contents, injecting drugs or even harvesting a small portion of tissues for biopsy.

It is thus possible with minimal discomfort or pain for the patient, aspirating calcifications from the rotator cuff (barbotage of calcifying tendinopathy), treating adhesive capsulites by capsular hydrodistension, infiltrating joints or adjacent tendon structures, treating by dry needling tendinopathies (patella, aquiliana or epicondylianas) or  plantar fasciitis.

Body Damage Assessment

The consultation to assess body damage aims to analyze the injuries and sequelae suffered by the patient who has suffered an accident at work, of road or personal, in which there is a temporary and/or permanent disability, to finally issue an Expert Medical Report.

The expert examination, in the context of the post-traumatic bodily damage evaluation, is a specialized medical act, performed by a Medical Expert, which is a physician with postgraduate training in the area of post-traumatic bodily damage evaluation.

The Knee and Shoulder Clinic has professionals specialized in this area, who accumulate extensive experience in body damage assessment under various rights, such as labor law and civil law.

The clinical staff of the Knee and Shoulder Clinic is focused on the thorough and complete approach of each case in order to make the more rigorous, objective and exempt assessment, being available to follow and guide the patients at all stages of their damage assessment process.
