Stemless in Shoulder Arthroplasty: is it the future?

Ana Gabriela Coelho de Almeida, 2019

Background: Stemless shoulder prothesis were introduced as a new modern shoulder replacement system, designed to reduce the potential risks associated to humeral component and find better functional results and fewer rates of surgery’s complications.

Methods: A literature search was performed selecting publications with report of the Constant Score for functional assessment in patients submitted to shoulder arthroplasty with stemless prothesis.

Results: Three types of shoulder arthroplasties were identified, with a Constant Score average between 63.4 and 73.3 and with a Revision Rate average of between 2.8 and 3.4%. These results were similar among studies with different follow up, from 6 months to 9 years.

Conclusions: Shoulder arthroplasty with stemless prosthesis is very promising to deal with shoulder pathology. Results in short- or medium-term demonstrated it is possible to obtain good functionality, with pain relief and patients’ satisfaction, together with low rates of complications, similarly to other conventional approaches.
